News: Middle East on Fire: Iran and Israel Exchange Missile Strikes as Conflict Reaches Dangerous New Heights

The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu

The skies over Tehran and Tel Aviv lit up with explosions and air raid sirens once again, as Iran and Israel exchanged deadly missile strikes and drone attacks in what has become the most dangerous escalation between the two rivals in decades.

The fierce conflict comes just a day after Israel launched a sweeping air offensive that killed top Iranian generals and nuclear scientists. In retaliation, Iran unleashed a barrage of over 200 ballistic missiles in four waves targeting key Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, and Jerusalem.

Death and Destruction on Both Sides

  • In Israel, at least four people were killed and over 200 injured, according to health and defense sources. A high-rise in central Tel Aviv was struck, and nine other buildings were destroyed in Ramat Gan.
  • Seven Israeli soldiers were also wounded in the missile attack — the first confirmed military casualties since the fighting began.
  • On the Iranian side, officials confirmed at least 80 deaths, including women, children, and nine nuclear scientists, following Israeli strikes on military installations, nuclear facilities, and even residential neighborhoods in Tehran. Over 320 people were reported injured.

The Mehrabad airport in Tehran, which houses military aircraft, was hit by two Israeli projectiles. Though no runways were damaged, explosions near government buildings added to the chaos across the capital.

War of Words: “Tehran Will Burn”

Both sides traded fierce warnings:

  • Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused Israel of initiating a war and vowed “severe punishment.” He stated:

“They started this war. We won’t allow them to escape unscathed from this great crime.”

  • Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz responded bluntly:

“If Khamenei continues to fire missiles towards the Israeli home front, Tehran will burn.”

Iran’s Iron Response—and a Warning to Allies

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard confirmed the strikes and warned that any country aiding Israel—specifically the U.S., U.K., or France—would face retaliation. Bases and ships across the Persian Gulf and Red Sea were listed as potential targets.

Iran accused the United States of complicity and warned that it shares “full responsibility” for the consequences of the Israeli strikes.

 Iron Dome Penetrated

Despite Israel's robust Iron Dome defense system, several missiles penetrated and hit major urban centers. Explosions rocked neighborhoods, sending residents scrambling for shelter.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he took refuge in shelters five times overnight, emphasizing the widespread fear gripping the nation.

Meanwhile, in the occupied West Bank, at least five Palestinians, including three children, were injured by falling rocket debris near Hebron. The Israeli military has reportedly imposed widespread closures, set up checkpoints, and restricted movement across the area.

“A Long Haul” – Experts Warn of Broader Conflict

Experts warn the region may be on the brink of a prolonged war.
Shahram Akbarzadeh, professor of Middle East politics in Australia, noted:

“Israel appears to be banking on Iran's response, knowing it could pull the U.S. deeper into the conflict.”

 Mixed Reactions from Iran’s People

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Iranian citizens to rise up against what he termed their “evil and oppressive regime,” the message was widely rejected by Iranians, many of whom are now caught between war and sanctions.

Al Jazeera’s Tehran correspondent reported widespread anger and despair among citizens:

“Ordinary people—not just military targets—are paying the highest price.”

What’s Next?

With no signs of de-escalation, both nations appear entrenched. As missiles continue to fly and diplomatic channels fall silent, the world watches in alarm, fearing the ignition of a wider regional war.
