News: Minnesota: Tragedy Unfolds, Manhunt Underway

Minnesota woke up to deeply troubling news Saturday as a targeted shooting spree claimed two lives and left two others critically injured. The scene is set for a tense, ongoing manhunt.

What Happened

In the early hours of June 14, 2025, Minnesota state lawmaker Rep. Melissa Hortman (DFL) and her husband were found fatally shot inside their Brooklyn Park home. Shortly before, at around 2 a.m., State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot in their Champlin residence. Hoffman remains in critical condition, and his wife was seriously injured.

Suspect on the Loose, Impersonation Raises Alarm

Authorities describe the assailant as wearing a police uniform, complete with badge and body armor, turning up at both crime scenes dressed as law enforcement. They even used what appeared to be a squad car at the second location. A dramatic encounter unfolded at Hortman’s home where officers were fired upon upon arrival. The suspect briefly exchanged gunfire before fleeing, leaving a chilling email behind and a handwritten list targeting politicians, abortion providers, and protest groups.

Community on Edge, Manhunt Intensifies

A vigorous manhunt is now underway, supported by both state and federal agencies. The public has been urged to be vigilant and do not open your door unless approached by two officers with proper identification .

Minnesota has issued shelter-in-place advisories, and court attendees at local protests have been postponed amid escalating fear and safety concerns .

Voices of Grief and Resolve

Governor Tim Walz decried the event as “politically motivated violence,” mourning Hortman as a "leader with grace and compassion" and expressing deep concern for the injured.

Reaction poured in from state and national leaders: Senator Amy Klobuchar shared her heartbreak; former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, herself a survivor of political violence called the shootings "horrified and heartbroken." Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and ex–Speaker Nancy Pelosi also condemned the attack and emphasized the need for heightened security across the political landscape.

Why This Matters

This wasn’t a random act—it appears to be targeted political violence, with victims chosen for their political roles and affiliations. That the suspect posed as a police officer adds a chilling layer of premeditation and deception. The result is a state on edge, grappling with safety, trust in public institutions, and political extremism right now.
