Nigeria’s Opposition Coalition Adopts ADC as 2027 Platform, Names David Mark National Chairman

Abuja, July 2, 2025 – In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, a coalition of opposition political parties in Nigeria has formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its unified platform. The coalition, comprising several registered parties, also announced the appointment of former Senate President David Mark as the new national chairman of the ADC.

According to reports, the decision was reached at a strategic meeting held in Abuja on Monday. Leaders of the coalition emphasized that the move is aimed at wresting power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) by presenting a united front under a credible and nationally respected leadership.

David Mark, who served as Senate President from 2007 to 2015, was described as a stabilizing force with the experience and political network to reposition the ADC into a formidable contender. In his acceptance speech, Mark assured coalition members of his commitment to building an inclusive, issues-based, and people-oriented opposition platform, declaring that “our people deserve better, and it is time for a rescue mission.”

Video reports captured moments from the meeting where coalition leaders pledged loyalty to the ADC. They stressed that the coalition is not just a merger but a grand alliance to deliver alternative governance that would address insecurity, economic hardship, and youth unemployment in the country.

However, there appears to be dissenting voices about this development. Prominent among the dissenters is Dumebi Kachikwu, the ADC’s presidential flag bearer in the 2023 election. Kachikwu has publicly criticized the coalition's decision, describing it as “a hijack of the party structure by political jobbers seeking personal relevance.” According to Arise News, he accused the coalition of sidelining key stakeholders within the ADC and warned that such moves could plunge the party into deep internal crisis.

Kachikwu argued that David Mark’s emergence as chairman does not reflect the will of the majority within the ADC, pointing out that “the party has structures, a constitution, and processes that must be respected if we truly believe in internal democracy.” He urged party members to resist what he described as an attempt to sell the ADC to the highest bidder for selfish political calculations.

Political observers note that while the coalition’s choice of David Mark could bring national recognition and strategic advantage, success will depend on how the dissent within the ADC is handled and whether the coalition can build consensus on policy direction and leadership processes.

What Next?
The coalition plans to embark on nationwide consultations to mobilize grassroots support and inaugurate committees to harmonize structures across states. There are also plans for a national convention to ratify Mark’s chairmanship and unveil the coalition’s manifesto. Meanwhile, Dumebi Kachikwu and his supporters have vowed to challenge any decision that undermines the party’s internal democracy, potentially setting the stage for legal and political tussles in the coming weeks.
